Hawaii: Friday, 1/17: Coffee Farm, Big Island Bees, Sunset Boat Cruise (ups and downs)

All right, let's time-travel back a few weeks, to Hawaii! On Friday, we started our gadding at a coffee farm, Heavenly Hawaiian, where we took a tour to see how coffee happens.

The road up is twisty and turny, and we greatly appreciated the signs that we were on the right track.

The view was great.
And they had a cat!
It was the season of pruning the plants, apparently. (I enjoyed the tour, but definitely didn't memorize anything; I will not be a great source of coffee information for you.)
Still, look at that view!
The coffee beans are spread out to dry.
And raked a few times.
I thought they looked as much like peanuts as coffee beans.
The cat came to see what we were up to.
We went down to watch the fire-roasting, which they apparently do once a week.
Pouring beans in the roaster.
And there was a sign to say goodbye, too.
After a lunch stop at Rebel Kitchen (it was good!), we went on to Big Island Bees, your Hawaiian honey source. We chose not to take the tour, but did enjoy looking around the photos and mementoes in the shop.

Bee books!
After taking part in the tasting*, I chose my favorite flavor, the lehua with vanilla bean. It's a little grainy, which normally wouldn't be my choice, but the flavor was so good. And of course once I saw the honey caramel drizzle, there was no way I wasn't getting some of that as well.
*All except the chili pepper honey, which was a hard pass.
Our evening plans were a sunset dinner cruise down the coast, to the Captain Cook memorial, and to cut to the chase (before sharing a hundred photos), I have a very mixed review.

Pros: The views were beautiful; the guide was interesting and informative; the musician was quite good; the crew was excellent.
Con: The seas were so rough that we were nearly seasick, couldn't eat dinner, and really didn't enjoy all the rest of it that much. Which was a shame!

However, it was beautiful. Leaving the bay.
Being puzzled by the name of this boat. The Kona Aggressor? II? There's a story there.
When photos just line themselves up.
I took a short video that gives an idea of the ups and downs, assuming it shows up here:
And a million more photos:
