In my lifetime, I have had cats of varying levels of intelligence, from the "oh sweetie, good thing you're cute" level up to the "oh, that's a little scary, how did you figure that out?" level. I would put Newman somewhere in the middle.
One thing he has definitely put together is that if he hears the ice maker, that means I am in the kitchen, conveniently near where the food is kept. Which means that nine times out of ten, I get ice to put in my water bottle, turn around, and see something like this:
If you think you can see food in the bowl behind him, you're right, at least by my standards. By his, if you can see the bottom of the bowl, even if there's food all around the outside, it needs topping off.

Guffawing! Is it still edible if you pick it up off the floor and put it back in his bowl?
ReplyDeleteIf sensing that there's a possibility of food denotes intelligence, then all three of my cats are geniuses. The other day I was in the kitchen and Muffin was sitting by the food bowl, staring steadily at me. Finally I said, "Oh, okay" and instantly the other two cats ran in. Can they understand English??? Was it my tone of voice?????
ReplyDeleteMany cats are surprisingly good at pattern recognition! What we say and how we say it.
DeleteNewman's like, "Look at me, Mom! I'm skin and bones! FEED ME." ;)
ReplyDeleteRight? He is totally denying that bowling ball belly.
DeleteOh my gosh, his little face is between at attempt at puppy eyes crossed with contempt at “how dare you think I can survive with only this much food.” Too funny
