Blogging About Blogging

Recently Kyria wrote a meta-post about blogging that caught my eye, and then Stephany was inspired to copy her, and here I am, on the bandwagon!

When did you start blogging and why? In August of 2006--the dark ages! I was getting more and more into knitting, and was inspired by the blogs I was reading.

What was your first blog post about? I wanted a place to talk about knitting and yarn, and show my cats, and talk about whatever was on my mind. In that first post, I mentioned being inspired by Crazy Aunt Purl--Laurie doesn't blog anymore, though I follow her on Instagram--and the Yarn Harlot, who practically doesn't blog anymore either. So many good blogs have come and gone! I actually delved more into the why of it in the second post.

What is your most used label and why? I don't know! I used to use them more, and then I wasn't using them for a long time, and now I'm trying to remember to use them. But I don't see anywhere they are listed in Blogger for me to get that info. If anyone can tell me where to find that, I'd be glad to update.

What is your most viewed post? And why do you think this is the case? Ummm...tough question! (I dug out my password for Statcounter, since I vaguely remembered using that, but it doesn't seem like helpful info. Or complete, for that matter.) Poking into Blogger some more, it looks like my most popular post is still the one I did in June 2007 where I detailed how I crochet dish scrubbies out of nylon netting, which shows as having 4.9K eyeballs on it (not eyeballs really, I suppose they mean views, how boring). That got linked on some sort of crafters site and was my first what-just-happened blog moment. It has since calmed down, but still gets visits, apparently. Huh.

I don't know how much to trust this data, though, since the second item on the list is a random post about email spam that got no comments, and I don't know why it would have received 19.5K views!

Do you answer comments on your blog? If so, what method do you use (email, post on blog)? I used to reply by email, assuming the commenter had given an email address, but last year I enabled the reply-to-comments feature and now I mostly reply within the comments section. This will probably mess with my page views and comment counts, but then, I don't closely track either of those things, so oh well.

Do you go back to see if a blog post that you commented on got replies? If so, how do you keep track? I have it set up so that comments are emailed to me. I keep the emails in a folder in case I want to refer to something.

What blog that you still read now have you read the longest? The Yarn Harlot still blogs, technically, but not very often. Goodness, it's depressing to look through Feedly and see all these defunct blogs! I wonder how long I've been reading Love & Hisses? Many years, anyway, and it's good for some great kitten and cat content. And I've read Alison's knitting blog, SpinDyeKnit, for many years as well. From the Cool Bloggers group, probably NGS? Maybe?

Do you post on other forms of social media regularly? If so, where? I post a lot of photos on Instagram, mainly of the cat and yarn/knitting, but also more general pictures. Some of them go on Facebook too, where I also write on other topics sometimes (not at length; that's what the blog is for!). I am trying to move from Twitter to Bluesky, but although I do like the latter, most of the "hockey people" I follow for NHL news have not moved there, so I still scroll the twits for that. Sigh. I want to not support the musk-baby at all, but I want my hockey news!

If you talk about people in your real life, do you use their real names? Not usually, unless they are similarly online themselves. Mostly I use describers (my friend) or initials (my friend V) instead.

If you could get paid to blog no matter what you are writing about, what would your focus/theme be? I can't think of anything I would want to write about that would be marketable! I enjoy my blog-whatever-crosses-my-mind style.

Any other questions?

  1. 2004 for me and I don't have a clue how to figure out my stats. Typepad allows me to reply to comments on my blog but unless the person comes back to see my response, it gets ignored. That's why I email back. Never heard of Bluesky. I don't remember my first post except that I explained that I probably wouldn't continue writing since it was Labor Day weekend and I was going back to school in a day or so. Here I am nearly 20 years later.

    1. So much for our plans, eh? I would never have guessed I'd be at it this long!

  2. Oh, fun, I should do this. I felt like my blog was winding down, and then I think two or three years ago I suddenly discovered people that were still old-school blogging and got back into the habit. I don't really track anything, and I've gotten out of the habit of using labels, which I really should start doing again.

    1. I'm so out of the label habit! And yes, I feel like blogging is coming back, in a way, in the last couple of years.

  3. Yay! I am so glad that you joined up and answered! It was fun to hear your answers. I have never heard of Bluesky either, but I am not really a huge social media person. I am trying to get back on IG and post sometimes, but I probably average about 1 post per year at this point!

To add a label sidebar (and see how many of each label you have), you can go to your main page (where you start a post) and scroll down on the left to Layout, then scroll down in your layout to the sidebar and click Add a Gadget, choose Labels, then you can customize either your most used ones or specific ones or whatever you want really!

    1. Thank you! I fiddled with it to get something there, and it seems to be working.

  4. This was so fun to read! Allison (above!) is the blog that still exists that I have been reading the longest, along with Swistle. I am amazed you've been blogging since 2006!

    1. It both does and doesn't feel like that long!

  5. You've been blogging for so long! I loved reading about how you got started. I would be curious to know what's kept you blogging all along, especially as so many bloggers stopped blogging entirely or switched to different platforms.

    1. I think I use the blog as a way to organize my thoughts, and as a reminder of what I did when, and it's useful enough to me as both that I keep going, even when no one comments. I like comments! But the main driver of doing it is for me.

  6. I started exactly one year before you! Isn't it incredible that we've kept going for so long? It's a nice hobby to have.

Like you (to some extent) and others, I stopped paying attention to stats a long time ago. My blog is my hobby and a way to connect to online friends while exercising my writing skills. Pageviews and all that don't matter to me a bit.

But I'm not attracted to other social media, like you are. Especially Instagram, where the photos are the thing. I'm terrible about taking photos.

    1. I love taking pictures, as you may have noticed! Ahem. One thing I don't like about Instagram is that a lot of people put up video/clips/reels instead of still photos, and I mostly wish they wouldn't. I don't like being surprised by motion when I'm not expecting it.

  7. 2006. My lace shawls book had been accepted for publication and my software-engineer husband said I needed a blog to go with it. I'd kind of wanted to have one for quite some time at that point, but was resisting--so he sat down, typetypetypetypetype, with a few foot-dragging imputs from me, and said with satisfaction, There! You have a blog. Go write something!

    Uh, uh...

Note that the blog is not mentioned in the book: it was late in the editing process and I actually wasn't sure how long the thing would last.

  8. Blogger does not give great stats, to be honest. I don't know how to find a count of the tags you use the most - I did it manually by clicking on what I assumed would be my most-used tags. For me, "Books" has 797 posts and "Hannah the Dog" has 117. So, you can get there, but it's work!

    1. I'm blogging more about this today! It's awkward but you can get around it. Still, I'm probably never going to care too much about labels.

  9. Yay - I'm glad you did this. It was so interesting to read! How amazing that you've been blogging since 2006 - what a cool record of your life you have here. <3

    1. Yes, I love that about the blog! I look back all the time, and it's to the point where I'm surprised if I didn't write about something. And if it happened before the blog? No record!
