Two (Short/Long) Weeks

The current plan is for my mother to come home from rehab in two weeks, on September 23rd. Which is crazy to me, since she still isn't allowed to put weight on that leg, but Medicare says they're not paying for more time there, for now anyway, and I guess we'll see (a) how she is by the 23rd, (b) how she does getting around at home, and (c) what the doctor says at her appointment on the 29th.

I'm sure the two weeks will feel long to Mom, who has already been there for so long and really wants to be home, but they're going to be busy ones for me. I'm going on a long-awaited girls trip to Key West from the 18th to the 21st, so I need to get ready for that, while getting home ready for Mom, on top of all the usual nonsense of life. It's a full plate! Good things, but a lot of things! I can see I will need to employ my strategy of Just One Thing a lot in the next two weeks.

Maggie says: relax.

  1. I know it's a lot. But I also want to say, enjoy that trip, and, you've got this.

  2. Oh boy, I think I missed something because I didn't realize your mom was in hospital! I hope she's okay. What do people do if they don't have family to help them, if Medicare won't pay for more rehab? I guess they have to pay out of pocket? How frustrating for everyone.
On another note, enjoy your trip! I've never been to the Florida Keys so I'd love to hear all about it!

    1. Well, you've been just a little busy recently! Mom fell at the end of July and cracked her hip, so after a few days in the hospital, she was sent to rehab, and has been there for 5+ weeks. She's pretty sick of it! And no, I don't know what people do who don't have family nearby. (I guess I'll find out when I'm her age.) Go into a nursing home, I guess?

Trust me, there will be many pictures from Key West!

  3. Very few cats--if any--would give different advice.

Enjoy your trip. I hope you can truly kick back in Key West.

    1. Yes! Yesterday afternoon, I was thinking how at that time in a week, I'd be checking in...can't wait.

  5. The title of this post caught my eye because my son and I like to refer to periods of time as "short-longs" or "long-shorts." A short- long is where time seems to go by really fast because you're so busy- but when you look back on it, it seems long because you did so many things. The long-short is obviously the opposite, when time seems to stretch interminably, but when you look back on it it seems short because not much really happened. Sounds like this week will be a sort-long for you, with your trip! I hope you have a great time. And fingers crossed everything works out with your mom.
